Did you figure it out? Some skills like logic (playing chess) or working out or playing an instrument have an actual conversation option to “mentor”. Others actions that mimic mentoring are talking about certain skills. They help increase skills in things like cooking (homestyle or gourmet) or logic (sharing astrological knowledge). Did you know “giving an archeological lecture” increases the archeology skill? There are so many conversation options it is difficult to find them. I usually pause to find the ones with special icons to increase the skill of my or the other Sims skill.

To actually mentor, the Sim has to be maxed on skill, and the other Sim needs to be doing the skill (like playing chess or an instrument.) Then clicking on the Sim doing the skill brings up the conversation option Mentor
